In Jon's own words, here is his journey as an entrepreneur.
I fell into blogging via my former profession. I was starting out and with a limited budget, Yellow Pages was out of the question. This was 2007 or 08.
Local business marketing online was still early, especially SEO. We hired a website developer who incorporated SEO at the time.
This turned out to be a very good decision.
Their SEO revolved around incorporating a blog into the website software which was novel. It was a CMS. They told me that I should write articles for prospective clients.
While the site was expensive, blogging cost me nothing. I got to work and within months clients started calling for online business.
Within a year we were ranking #1 for most targeted keywords in our area (and surrounding areas). I realized then the potential of the internet.
I launched a niche website that quickly grew. From there I built up a niche site portfolio that I run to this day.
Some sites worked. Some failed.
In 2014 I launched what is now my biggest and most lucrative niche site profits which brings in about $50,000 USD per month in revenue.
It's my focus but I'm diversifying with many of my own niche sites and additional blogs that I'm slowly growing. I launched Fat Stacks to write about this Fat Stacks blogging business. It's been fun to run for several years now.
How successful is your business today?
Measuring success is relative.
Compared to a digital publishing business like publishing websites and corporations, my portfolio is small potatoes. Compared to someone starting out with regular niche websites, my portfolio is a wild success.
On the balance, my operation is fairly lean. I have 9 employees and I contract with dozens of writers who are paid per word.
Some writers contribute a lot and some here and there.
My total niche site monthly revenue ranges from $45,000 to $60,000 USD per month. This does NOT include Fat Stacks revenue which I consider a separate business from my niche site portfolio.
My non-content expenses such as VAs, hosting, software etc. runs about $8,000 per month. I then reinvest quite a bit of profits back into my sites in the form of content.
I invest $7,000 to $15,000 per month in content.
Example niche site I don't reveal most of my niche sites just because I don't relish more competition. However, for the sake of illustration, I recently launched a new niche site that I hope to grow but also it serves as an example site for Fat Stacks readers. That site is https://cyclebaron.com/.
I enjoy mountain biking and so it's a perfect niche for me.
What are 1 or 2 strategies that have made your business successful?
My strategy with growing an online content publishing business is very simple. I focus on publishing evergreen articles that target long tail, low competition keywords.
This way I don't have to deal with linkbuilding. That's not to say my sites don't have inbound links. They have piles of them, but they're acquired naturally.
These days I'm also getting quite a bit of traffic from Pinterest.
Right now it's about 300,000 monthly visitors but I'm growing my Pinterest team and am working hard to grow that. I believe there is great potential with Pinterest for many niches.
It's a big growth area for me right now.
As for website monetization, I focus on display ads and to a lesser extent, affiliate marketing. I love monetizing with display ads because it gives me the flexibility to publish on any topic I like and still monetize it.
This means I can create obscure articles that attract links naturally and get traffic fairly easily. It's been a very effective model for me.
The final aspect of all this is developing systems with my teams so that much of it runs without my involvement. There's no way I can run 16 niche sites on my own.
Therefore, I've hired a great crew of folks to help out. They more or less handle everything. That said, I monitor everything weekly just to make sure the numbers and quality is on track.
Where do you hope to take your business in the future?
I believe the current outlook for content sites is huge. I'm investing quite a bit into growing a portfolio of high-traffic sites primarily monetized with display ads.
I'm working on leveraging my systems, workflow, relationships and knowledge to grow as many sites into huge earners as possible.
While I currently have 16 niche sites, I don't expect them all to be a huge success.
If 1/4 of them grow to $50,000 per month over the next five years, that would be fantastic. You win some and you lose some.
